Consulting Rare Volumes

If you wish to consult rare books in libraries or archives you will normally be expected to adhere to specified access conditions. Libraries strives to facilitate access to all their collections, but need to balance this against their duty to protect and conserve particularly rare or valuable items both for the institution and for future researchers. Access conditions are often similar to those encountered in most Archives, and can include:

>> Working in pencil only

>> Wearing gloves

>> Using book supports and weights

>> Access by prior appointment

>> Invigilation throughout

>> No photocopying
